25 Years of Serving Women and Girls
Thanks to the dedication of this community, we’ve been delivering lifesaving sexual and reproductive health care to women and girls around the world for 25 years. In honor of our 25th anniversary, we put together a timeline of USA for UNFPA’s history. Together, we’ve become a powerful voice for sexual and reproductive rights and have empowered millions of women and girls with the care they need.
In the past 25 years, we have:
– Reduced maternal deaths by 42%. Today, the chance of a woman dying from pregnancy or childbirth complications in her lifetime is 1 in 180 – whereas a few decades ago, the chance was 1 in 73.
– Reached 182 million additional women with access to modern contraceptives – so they have choice over their bodies, families, and futures.
– Prevented girls from becoming child brides – which makes it more likely that girls can go to school, be free from violence, avoid early pregnancy, and pursue their dreams. 25 years ago, 1 in 4 girls became child brides and today that figure is 1 in 5.
None of this would have been possible without your support. But, with reproductive freedoms at risk around the world, we still have so much more to do to create a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every woman and girl can reach her fullest potential.
In honor of our 25th anniversary, a generous donor has agreed to match the first four months of every new $25+ sustaining gift, up to $25,000. If you’re not already a sustaining donor, now is your chance to have the greatest impact for women and girls.
Thank you for being there for every woman and girl, no matter what.
